Synopsis
He'd bite her in a heartbeat, if she'd only set him free...

He's lost, trapped, doomed for all eternity...

Rich, titled, and undead, gentleman vampyre James Maitland, Lord Kettering, fears himself doomed to a cold and lonely existence—trapped for decades in an abandoned castle. Then, beautiful Scottish witch Blaire Lindsay arrives, and things begin to heat up considerably.

Unless he can persuade her to set him free...

Feisty Blaire Lindsay laughs off the local gossip surrounding her mother's ancestral home—stories of haunting cannot scare off this battle-born witch. But when she discovers the handsome prisoner in the bowels of the castle, Blaire has no idea that she has unleashed anything more than a man who sets her heart on fire.

My Review
When Blaine's brother is insistent on going to a estate that he has inherited, he brings her along, even though leaving Edinburgh is the last thing she wants to do. When they arrive, she and her brother are shocked when they discover its a abandoned castle. As they start to settle in, Blaine hears noises and a man's voice, but she doesn't know if its real and if its a ghost or not.  James Maitland, Lord Kettering, was tricked twenty years previous when trying to feed on a young woman, and was then trapped in the deserted castle he awakens in. He starts to remember that it was five witches who trapped him here. When he senses others in the castle, he realizes that this may be his chance to free himself. Even though it goes against Blaine's instincts, she senses something good in James, and releases him from his prison, she has no idea who he is and why he has been trapped here. Even though she wants to remain aloof and distant from James, she starts to feel a deeper connection to him, and even though she knows he can be dangerous, she knows in her heart that he would never harm her or her family. When enemies of James come knocking on the door, she learns of his true identity and only when she accepts James into her heart will they be able to survive the danger and grab onto a chance of a future together?

It Happened One Bite is the first in the Vampire Trilogy by Lydia Dare. It is connected a bit to her Westfield Wolves series. I was really excited to read It Happened One Bite because I had recently read the first book in the Westfield series, so I had high hopes for this one. It started out a bit slower than I expected. As I continued with the story though, it picked up as the sparks started to fly between James and Blaine. Blaine is a witch and part of a five witch coven, and as such she protects her heart and is very practical, because she has had to be. When she meets James, a fire burns within her, and even though she wants to give into the desire she feels for him, she fights it. James, is burning with rage and desiring revenge, but his attraction to Blaine is undeniable and his anger turns into desire for a woman who seems to not want him, but he knows that she desires him as much as he desires her.

There is quite a bit going on in this story. In the beginning it seems to be just a romance between a vampire and a witch in the regency era in England. However we start to see there is more to it than a love story. There is a few twists and turns involving two enemy vampires, whose only desire is to kill everyone that James cares about. I liked the aspect of vampires in a historical setting, with a portion of witch lore. The setting was set up perfect to set the stage for the story. The characters were exciting to see together. James, is handsome and confident and powerful, yet very gentle at times, and I couldn't help but fall in love with him from the start. I couldn't help but be on his side for most of the story, seeing a character that even though is a vampire, has honest intentions and even though can be brooding, he isn't dark or sinister type of vampire. He is a gentleman through and through, because he started out as a gentleman before he became a vampire. So I admired him quite a bit, and in the way he handles Blaine is just precious. Blaine is strong willed, and fiercely independent and with her powers as a witch is intent on standing by James side even though she is mortal. At times it could be quite humorous, but there was such a enticing quality to their relationship and the way they worked together.

It Happened One Bite was a sweet and charming paranormal story set in the beautiful setting of Scotland. A heated read full of sensuality and a fascinating plot with twists and turns that puts together a memorable story.

My Featured Novel this Week:

But something about being with him feels oddly freeing , and a delicious tingle warns Helena that more than her reputation may be in danger...

Daniel finds most of the prim and proper lovely′s rules ridiculous but when she insists on masquerading as his wife for the sake of appearances, he immediately envisions the delights of sharing a bedchamber. The unexpected smouldering beneath her straitlaced exterior ignites his desire, and die vulnerability hidden beneath her cool control makes him want her even more. Yet Helena′s a lady, and he′s the son of a highwayman. How can he ever ask her to share his world?

Waiting On" Wednesday is a weekly event hosted by Breaking the Spine, that spotlights upcoming releases we are eagerly anticipating. This week I’m waiting on, Coming Out Jan 2014

In Dark Lycan, Christine Feehan journeyed into the heart of the Carpathians, and into the souls of two lifemates stirred by the flush of passion and the threat of annihilation. In Dark Wolf, the breathtaking story continues as the bonds of family are imperiled, and the fate of two lovers lies hidden in the seductive shadows between life and death.

Skyler Daratrazanoff always recognized the miracle that was Dimitri Tirunul, a man beyond any dream that had ever engaged her nights. But she was human. Vulnerable. He was Carpathian. Nearly immortal. She was nineteen. He was an ancient. Yet she held half his soul, the light to his darkness. Without her, he would not survive. Caught between the two warring species, Dimitri has spent centuries hunting the undead to keep his people free, and humans safe. He had survived honorably when others had chosen to give up their souls. But now, marked for extermination by the Lycans, Dimitri found himself alone, and fearing for his life. But salvation was coming…

No Lycan would ever suspect someone like Skyler to dare mount a secret rescue operation. A teenage girl. A human of untested abilities. But she had something no one else had. She was predestined for Dimitri—as he was for her. And there was nothing stronger for Skyler than her desire to see her life-dream come true. Whatever the risk.

Short Book Review-Once Upon A Highland Summer

Once Upon A Highland Summer
Lecia Cornwall
Avon Impulse
Epub Book
100 Pages
Published November 2013
Scottish Highlands Historical Romance
ISBN: 9780062328434
Authors Website
Synopsis
A lush Scottish historical romance in the vein of Karen Ranney and Karen Hawkins.

An ancient curse, a pair of meddlesome ghosts, a girl on the run, and a fateful misunderstanding make for the perfect chance at true love.

Lady Caroline Forrester is on the run from her brother's scheme to marry her off to the highest bidder. An escape to Scotland offers a chance at employment as a governess and freedom from an unhappy marriage—it's the perfect solution. But Caroline wasn't prepared for the feelings that her new employer brings out in her.

Alec McNabb, the reluctant Earl of Glenorne, never expected to return home to Scotland. But now that he's there, he realizes he has obligations that he cannot escape. Alec needs to marry well, and quickly.

When a case of mistaken identity—coupled with the sensual, magical atmosphere of Glenorne Castle—results in a passionate encounter, Caroline and Alec must decide whether their attraction is enough to overcome the problems of their pasts, or whether this one chance at true love was over before it began…

My Review
Once Upon A Highland Summer is a single title by Lecia Cornwall. Its a short novella, about 100 pages, and I received a copy from Avon through Edelweiss. I wasn't sure how much I would enjoy this one, since it was a novella, and I tend to be a tad picky with the shorter stories. However this story just cemented my desire to read more from this author. I was impressed with how well structured the story seemed to be considering the length. I didn't feel at all like it was too short, it felt quite perfect. The characters were well developed and it was fun seeing these two fall in love admidst the highlands in the sweet summer days. As with most stories typical of this era and style, there was the usual conflict of the hero being engaged to someone else, and a mistaken identity, and having to choose duty over love. But there was a little side story of Alec and Carlonline's grandparents that added a certain hitch to the story. The way that Lecia Cornwall put in her descriptions of the surrouding were so details and vivid, I almost felt as if I was there in the story, smelling the beautiful scents and seeing the breathtaking scenery. A great story that I would recommend to anyone that love a solid romance with the romantic setting of the highlands and a sweet love story to tug at your heartstrings. A Tale you NEVER should wish to miss out on.

The dazzling wedding fashions of A Lady’s Favor dress shop are guaranteed to make any girl the talk of the ton. But the brides aren’t the only ones falling in love…

Lady Helaine’s father was cast out of society as a liar and a thief—a scandal which renders her unfit for marriage. In order to provide for herself and her mother, she adopts an assumed name and runs a dressmaker’s shop that specializes in bridal wear for ladies of high society. Helaine is happiest immersed in silk and satin, but she lives in terror that someone will learn her true identity and she will lose everything…again.

Robert Percy, Viscount Redhill, is entranced with the mysterious Helaine and weaves a web of seduction sure to ensnare the delectable dress designer. Yet too late he learns the heartbreaking truth about who she used to be. Now he must find a way to overcome the past to claim Helaine as his own. But what chance has love when a secret mistress becomes a scandalous wife?
My Review
Lady Helaine was once a member of the Ton, and was raised in society, but then when it became a scandal that her father was stealing from others, they were cast out. Her father disappeared, and she and her mother were forced to provide for themselves. So in order to keep them from starving and living on the streets, Helaine's takes a new identity as a "Mrs. Mortimer" and she then designs gowns for young ladies in high society. When put in a hard position of asking for money instead of credit, since she will need food and more supplies in cloth and accessories, she decides to go to the Viscount Redhill. Robert is outraged when the Mrs. Mortimer comes to call and demands that he pay for his sister wedding trousseau, and believing the amount to be way more than he thought it would cost, he forces her out of his home, and threatens to call the magistrate on her. When Helaine returns home, she knows she will have to take swift action, but then Robert's sister, devises a plan for Helaine to get supplies. Helaine has been forced to take certain measures to get credit at certain suppliers, but when Robert and his sister demand to come along, she concedes reluctantly. A disaster ends up happening, and Helaine has lost her one and only source of materials. Then Robert declares his intentions to have her as his mistress. Even though that is the last thing that Helaine could ever desire, she finds she can't resist his tender embraces, or the way he heightens her senses with his kisses. When Helaine's past comes to light, he wonders if there will be a way to overcome the past and build a future together as husband and wife.

Over the years I have heard so many great things about Jade Lee. When I found Wedded In Scandal on the shelves of my local library, I couldn't resist trying it out. Especially since this whole series was there, and I wanted to try out the first one in the series. I don't always have the chance to read a series in order, but I do want to try in this series. I do love Regency romances that have a setting of a hidden identity and where a character has to get creative to survive. I truly fell in love with Helaine for the most part, strong and independent and smart. She had spunk and fire to her personality, she didn't just give into any demands, but went after what she desired. Robert, is like most hero's from this time period-Handsome, Arrogant, Stiff and proper. But underneath is a man that has a secret that could ruin him just as Helaine's secret could destroy all that she has built. Even though they seem to be from opposite worlds, they both have a unique bond with each other, and seem to connect because underneath the surface they are more alike than different.

I found the style of this story, very original in its own way. There were certain things, such as the basic story line that was very similar to many other Regency era romances that I have read. However, as I read Wedded In Scandal  I found that it was way more intriguing than I thought it would be. I found it to be so captivating and witty and charming that I couldn't put it down, having only read it under a couple of hours. Yes it is slight shorter with only 300 pages, but I flew through the pages faster than I have in a book for a long time. There was a certain detail to the story that pulled me in from the beginning. I couldn't help but admire the compelling writing of Jade Lee as she weaves a tale of in depth characters and a plot with fast paced tension to sweep you away into a beautifully crafted love story of passion and desire.

Overall I couldn't help but fall in love with Jade Lee and the first installment in the Bridal Favors Series of Wedded In Scandal. A truly sensational read that is refreshing and emotionally driven!!! A WONDERFUL STORY!!! WOW!!

But Lady Hermione Marlowe refuses to believe that the handsome gentleman she's loved from afar for so long could be so wicked. If only she had a way to prove to the ton that Lord Rockhurst is as proper as the rest. If only she knew what he really did under cover of the night . . .

A Clandestine Encounter . . .

When she stumbles upon Michael St. Clair being beaten by a gang of men, she tries to intervene and finds herself taken captive along with him. The two escape, and Isobel finds herself curious about her companion. In fact, Michael is the younger brother of a prince and member of a wealthy family with a fabulous secret, which his father carried to the grave. An honourable man, Michael accompanies Isobel home to safety, only to learn their time together has damaged her reputation. He agrees to marry her, and despite her reluctance, Isobel eventually concedes. The king orders the Highlander Laird Malcolm MacNeill, seeking an English bride, to provide the lass safe escort and learn what has become of her staff. Escorting her home safely proves a dangerous trial in and of itself and keeping his heart out of the matter, when the king wishes her wed to one of his loyal barons instead, complicates issues further. Losing his heart to the lass means Malcolm could very well lose his head.

Orpheus has just one goal: to rescue his brother from the Underworld. He's not expecting a woman to get in the way. Especially not a Siren as gorgeous as Skyla. He has no idea she's an assassin sent by Zeus to seduce, entrap, and ultimately destroy him.

Yet Skyla herself might have the most to lose. There's a reason Orpheus feels so familiar to her, a reason her body seems to crave him. Perhaps he's not the man everyone thinks... The truth could reveal a deadly secret as old as the Eternal Guardians themselves.

Book Review-A Highland Werewolf Wedding

A Highland Werewolf Wedding

Paranormal Romance

Synopsis
Elaine Hawthorn is a gray American werewolf, currently out of work, and on a mission to share in a family treasure. When she arrives in Scotland, she nearly has a head-on collision with one hot, kilt-garbed Highlander, and runs him off the road.

Werewolf laird Cearnach MacNeill isn't happy Elaine ruined his car, but he quickly becomes her protector after a misunderstanding lands her right in the middle of two feuding clans. Now he's out to ensure that this sexy female wolf gets her fair share of her clan's treasure. He knows he should leave well enough alone, but it's too late to leave his heart out of it.

My Review

Cearnach MacNeill, is on his way to his friends wedding, when a crazy woman driver (in his mind) ruins his car. When he first meets her, his senses flare out, and recognizes her as a gray wolf, but even worse she is American. Of all the luck, he knew from his brothers experiences American women were dangerous, so he plans on keeping her on a tight leash. Seeing as she ruined his means of transportation he forces her to come with him to the wedding, which he is determined not to miss. Cearnach despite his good behavior, gets into a entanglement at the wedding, and has to leave abruptly and on their way back to his car, they find it has disappeared. He suspects its a enemy clan playing tricks on him, and before he knows it, through a strange process of events, he finds himself partnered with Elaine in their wolf forms, trying to make it to his Clan alive. Elaine has come to Scotland to find her uncles lost treasure. But what begins as a accident turns into Elaine being brought along on a adventure she never planned on or wanted. When they finally make it to Cearnach's clan and home, she is out of her comfort zone. Elaine is a lone wolf, having lost her parents when she was young, and being forced to go into hiding for years, and just recently has changed her name back to its original form. She has no idea how to react to the chemistry she feels between herself and Cearnach, or how she feels with the warmth and welcome from his family and clan. Will Elaine be able to put her past behind her and embrace a future with Cearnach?

I have anxiously waiting for this title to become available at my local library. I can't believe it took this long to get my eager hands on this one. Ever since I discovered Terry Spear a couple years ago, her books have been a ride, and I have loved every story she has written. I do love shifters, more than any other paranormal creature, there is a certain magic and mystery to these creatures. Terry Spear has a certain way about her, in the writing and the formation of the plot and story line that is too irresistible to resist. A Highland Werewolf Wedding is the eleventh installment in the series, and is a extension of the highland series that is part of the Heart of the Wolf series. One thing that I have loved about this is the setting. You almost feel as you are reading, that the culture is historic Scotland with the kilts and bagpipes, delicious food and the way the Clan relationships are formed. There is quite a lot going for this story, but one of my top favorite aspects is how the author works in the highland culture in a contemporary and paranormal setting, which you don't normally see.

In the first chapter, you see the instant sizzling chemistry between Cearcnach and Elaine. At first they are furious with each other, but when scent each other, and recognize the wolf in each other, and anger quickly turns to passion faster than you can take a breath. Cearnach is very Alpha Male, but Elaine is no beta, she is a Alpha in her own right. It was quite entertaining seeing how equally matched they are for each other. Elaine isn't full on fighter, but she will protect what is hers at all cost, and I loved how their relationship develops. Surprisingly I loved both the hero and the heroine. There are times I can be a bit picky about the heroine, but in this one, I couldn't really find anything I didn't like about Elaine. She was full of passion and zest for life, and the author makes her come to life. My heart went out to Elaine, since she has never been able to have a man stick with her, when she is willing to put herself out there and risk everything to find her mate. At first she suspects Cearnach of being the same, however Cearnach is no male to let go of something he burns and aches for with a fierceness. Cearcnach is a fighter and protector, but he is so gentle at times with Elaine, and their connection is instantaneous from the get go. The "finding treasure" aspect added a bit of intrigue to the story. As you read this one, you see how the author balances the plot with the love story in such a intricate way, you find it near impossible to put down.

Overall, I found the story is action packed and filled with a intense sensuality yet at the same time you see a side of playful fun you would expect from a shifter romance. A delightful and almost magical tale that blends the highland romance in with the paranormal danger that will arouse you. A MESMERIZING STORY TO CAPTURE YOU!!

My Featured Novel this Week:
The Maiden Warrior by Mary Reed McCall, Published June 2002
Blurb:
The Captive Bride

The day she was wedded to the bold English knight Aidan de Brice young Gwynne was taken captive by the Welsh bandits who'd claimed her since her birth. Years have passed, and she barely recognizes the breathtaking warrior before her who once won her heart -- but her senses recall what her memory cannot. Still, any lingering thoughts of love must be dispelled, for the proud, brave lady's loyalties now lie elsewhere.

Aidan is shocked to discover that the infamous "Dark Legend" -- the elusive rebel leader he is honor bound to defeat -- is not only a beautiful woman...but also his stolen bride! Now that he has taken her prisoner, Aidan knows his true duty is to his heart. Defying his king, Aidan must use all his power to keep fair Gwynne from harm...and rekindle her lost memories of a soul-stirring love more mighty than any kingdom or crown.

Why Maiden Warrior??
Well I read this one years ago, when I first started reading romance novels, and I just loved the intensity between Aidan and Gwynne. Their relationship starts a bit rocky, but the ending was so delicious. This would be my favorite book by Mary Reed McCall.
