Book Review-Slave To Sensation

Slave To Sensation
Psy-Changeling (1)
Nalini Singh
Berkley Sensation
334 Pages
Fantasy Romance
Published September 2006
Paperback
ISBN: 0-425-21286-6

Synopsis:
A fresh new talent in the realm of paranormal romance, Nalini Singh dives into a world torn apart by a powerful race with phenomenal powers of the mind-- and none of the heart...

In a world that denies emotions, where the ruling Psy punish any sign of desire, Sascha Duncan must conceal the feelings that brand her as flawed. To reveal them would be to sentence herself to the horror of "rehabil' ' n"--the complete psychic erasure of everything she ever was...

Both human and animal, Lucas Hunter is a changeling hungry for the very sensations the Psy disdain. After centuries of uneasy coexistence, these two races are now on the verge of war over the brutal murders of several changeling women. Lucas is determined to find the Psy killer who butchered his packmate, and Sascha is his ticket into their closely guarded society. But he soon discovers that this ice- cold Psy is very capable of passion--and that the animal in him is fascinated by her. Caught between their conflicting worlds, Lucas and Sascha must remain bound to their identities--or sacrifice everything for a taste of darkest temptation...

My Review:
Sasha is a Psy, having grown up where her own mother is part of their great council, and having to never experience any emotion. But Sasha is different than the rest of the Psy, she does feel emotion, but tries to hide it from the other Psy so that the unthinkable doesn't happen.  Then her mother tells her that she will be liason of sorts with a changeling, more specifically Luc Hunter the Alpha of his pack. Lucas, has always had a certain distaste for the Psy, however when he meets Sasha he thinks differently. He knows that there is something different about her, but he can't put his finger on what exactly there is that makes her stand out from the other Psy. As they work together, in trying to discover a missing girl, and a man who keeps on murdering innocent changeling women, they start to draw closer together, despite the fact that the odds are definitely against them. Both Lucas and Sasha will have to work in unison to solve the greatest mystery and to come out both alive. Will the love that they have built be enough to stand against everything that stands against them?

I loved reading Lucas's story, I have read a few other books within this series, and I have always wanted to read Lucas and Sasha's story, they always seemed so connected and in tune with one another in the other books, that I definitely was thrilled when I got my hands on this one at the library. I found it to be such a riveting tale and had a suspenseful intensity about it, that really kept me turning the pages, and I could hardly put it down. The passion between these two is definitely steaming, and will fog up your windows for sure. I also loved the plot of this book, it definitely was one rollercoaster after another, and left me wondering what was going to happen next and always surprising me till the very end.

-------------------------
Set on a bluff overlooking the Itchen River, the manor was surrounded by terraced gardens and orchards that flowed into two hundred acres of parkland and wild forests.
-------------------------
About It Happened One Autumn
Four young ladies enter London society with one necessary goal: they must use their feminine wit and wiles to find a husband. So they band together, and a daring husband-hunting scheme is born.

It Happened at the Ball...

Where beautiful but bold Lillian Bowman quickly learned that her independent American ways weren't entirely "the thing." And the most disapproving of all was insufferable, snobbish, and impossible Marcus, Lord Westcliff, London's most eligible aristocrat.

It Happened in the Garden...

When Marcus shockingly -- and dangerously -- swept her into his arms. Lillian was overcome with a consuming passion for a man she didn't even like. Time stood still; it was as if no one else existed...thank goodness they weren't caught very nearly in the act!

It Happened One Autumn...

Marcus was a man in charge of his own emotions, a bedrock of stability. But with Lillian, every touch was exquisite torture, every kiss an enticement for more. Yet how could he consider taking a woman so blatantly unsuitable...as his bride?

Book Review-The Fire King

The Fire King
Dirk And Steele Series
Marjorie M Liu
Leisure,
307 Pages
Published Aug 2009
Paranormal/Shifter Romance
ISBN: 0-8439-5940-1

Synopsis:
Long ago, shape-shifters were plentiful, soaring through the sky as crows, racing across African veldts as cheetahs, raging furious as dragons atop the Himalayas. Like gods, they reigned supreme. But even gods have laws, and those laws, when broken, destroy.
Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. Three words in three very different languages, and yet Soria understands. Like all members of Dirk & Steele, she has a gift, and hers is communication.  When she is chosen to learn the dead language of a shape-shifter resurrected after thousands of years of icy sleep, she discovers a warrior consumed with fury.
Strong as a lion, quick as a serpent—Karr is his name, and in his day he was king. But he is a son of strife, a creature of tragedy.  As fire consumed all he loved, so death was to be his atonement. Now, against his will, he has awoken.  Zoufalství. Epätoivo. Asa. In English, the word is despair. But Soria knows the words for love.

My Review:
Soria is a member of the Dirk and Steele, have special gifts of her own. Although she isn't a shape-shifter, she can understand any language on earth. So when the leader of Dirk and Steele, asks her help them with a problem that only she can assist with. Soria is however very reluctant to do so, because a year previous she lost her right arm, and has had a difficult road since then. However when she meets a creature unlike anything she has ever met, she is intrigued and acts out of character, even for her. Karr, having been awoken from the ground from three thousand years, he is furious that he is chained to the floor. Karr is a mix breed of shifters, half lion and half bird, is unlike any of them have ever seen. Since he is the epitome of the impossible. But Karr is far from the last of his people, having been the leader of all those that were mixed shifters, he vowed to protect them at all costs. Then he meets with Soria who is the most captivating woman he has ever met. Even though he has a rage within him, he knows that he could never hurt her no matter the circumstance. The Fire King is a searching journey for both Karr and Soria where they search for the truth and also share a precious love that they both would fight for.

This is the last one of the Dirk & Steele series that is out, and the only one that I hadn't read, and I am so glad that I have. Its definitely one of my favorites of this series. Both Karr and Soria are powerful enigmatic characters where I endeared myself to them. Karr has only known of killing and rejected and pain in his life. Then he meets up with someone that embraces him fully as he is, never judging and always having trust in him. Never has he known anyone to have such complete faith in one as him, not feeling as deserving of it, even though he does. Soria is a young woman that was powerful and able in her own right before the incident that changed her life forever. Having lost her dependent arm, she struggles more than anything trying to adjust to this new life. However when she is summoned once more, she wants to escape from it, but she learns that you can never escape fate. After she meets with Karr, she knows that no one should be chained as he, even if he is dangerous. So they help each other, learning to live and trust once more and in each other. This is a powerful story that brought a tear to my eye a time or two. Marjorie M Liu portrays their emotions so well, its such a enthralling read. Definitely one I would recommend to anyone that enjoys a good romance mixed with some paranormal.

Book Review-The Vow

The Vow
Linda Lael Miller
Pocket
339 Pages
America Western
Published Apr 1998
ISBN: 0671003992

Synopsis:
After twelve years, the headstrong Annabel McKeige is back in the frontier town of Parable, Nevada. Back to face the husband she left behind ...the son she never saw grow to manhood ...and the home where her heart broke when she lost a beloved daughter. But her intentions regarding their marriage are soon clear--even if her motives are not.

Gabe McKeige loved Annabel too fiercely to let a chance like this slip away. But the iron-willed rancher is also too proud to beg--he didn't twelve years ago, and he won't now. So, Gabe sets out to woo Annabel the only way he knows...with passion-filled kisses and sensual touches that conjure the sweet firestorm of their marriage bed. And Annabel is finding that the man she once left is unbearably hard to resist ....

My Review:
Annabel hasn't seen her husband or son in twelve years, after losing her beloved daughter she grieved deeply. Wanting to find love again and to have children once more, she comes back to Nevada, (all the way from England) and asks Gabriel for a divorce. However, Gabriel has totally different plans, now that Annabel has returned he has no reason to let her go this time. Gabe always has had a deep love for Annabel, but had too much pride the first time to go after her, this time he wants it to be different. He has no intention of letting her get a divorce, but showing her how strong they are together. After coming back to Parable, Nevada she is eager to see her son that she had to give up. Knowing that she has hurt him deeply she vows to herself to make amends and prove to him that she has always loved him even though she wasn't always there for him. Things are definitely rocky for this small family but their love is strong and will be proved time and time again, which will only draw them closer together.

I enjoyed this one that Linda Lael Miller has written, it definitely was a deep love story, the kind that always pulls at your heartstrings. I have always loved reading Linda Lael Miller, she writes in a way that takes you back in time to the old westerns, with the plains, and indians and the kind of life that is very different, but which is portrayed so vividly. What I didn't like about this book was that Annabel didn't return home sooner, after all she lived in England for about twelve years, and its understandable in some ways, but I just didn't agree with a mother not raising her son. But I guess its better late than never, and I loved how not only did Annabel and Gabe were driven to forgive one another and become closer as a couple; but Miller also developed a relationship between mother and son, that definitely forced out a tear or two out of me. So if you are looking for a deep, emotional love story that has its tense moment but has a happy ending this one is for you!!!!
